Position Summary:

The primary role of the Nurse Practitioner (NP) is to provide high quality, safe, effective and evidence-based care in partnership with patients and families, in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario Nurse Practitioner Practice Standards and GGH’s mission, vision, values and policies. The NP uses advanced nursing knowledge clinical practice expertise and provides leadership to promote optimal patient health, program development, process improvements and the enhancement of professional standards. The NP optimizes the patient’s experience and care outcomes by:

  • Being accountable for one’s decisions and professional practice;
  • Establishing a therapeutic relationship with the patient and family;
  • Collaborating with other members of the patient’s care team;
  • Coordinating, communicating and documenting patient care activities;
  • Providing high quality, evidenced based, patient and family-centred care.

Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Abilities:

  • Nurse Practitioner (Registered Nurse in the Extended Class) with certificate of registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario with license to prescribe controlled substances
  • Master’s degree in Nursing or equivalent preferred
  • Completion of the Prescription and Management of Controlled Drugs and Substances Course
  • Experience in clinical program development and evaluation
  • Experience in development and implementation of Medical Directives and Policies and Procedures
  • BCLS certification
  • Current ACLS and I.V. Certification
  • TNCC (or equivalent) and PALS preferred
  • 3-5 years of recent experience as a nurse practitioner working with adults and paediatrics is required; Experience as a nurse practitioner in the Emergency department preferred
  • Demonstrated clinical knowledge in performance and interpretation of ECG’s, IV therapy and venipuncture, suturing above the fascia, performance of minor procedures (aspiration, excision of lesions or biopsy) above the dermis, defibrillation, cardioversion and external pacing, splinting, casting and wound care.
  • Physical assessment skills with demonstrated ability to assess clients from paediatrics to geriatrics
  • Working knowledge of Life Threatening Arrhythmias
  • Advanced Trauma Nursing Courses and/or recent related experience
  • Advanced Cardiac Care and CTAS Courses preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to best practice, nursing standards and life-long learning
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated excellent assessment skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellent customer service when interacting with patients, families, colleagues and physicians
  • Strong clinical judgment and diagnostic reasoning skills, with a demonstrated commitment to collaborative practice
  • Demonstrated leadership in committee work, education, quality improvement, policy & procedure development, and knowledge translation initiatives
