Ogimaawabiitong Kenora Chief Advisory is hiring for an Full Time Environmental Health Officer (EHO)

Key Objectives:
Protect, promote, and enhance health of Kenora Chiefs Advisory member First Nations communities through the Environmental Public Health Program and services in: Drinking Water, Food Safety, Health and Housing, Wastewater, Solid Waste Disposal, Facilities Inspection, Communicable Disease Control, and Emergency Preparedness and Response. Inspect and assess on-reserve premises including facilities, homes, and community events for adverse health and environmental conditions. Provide advice, guidance, education, and recommendations to First Nations Chief and Council and community members to help them prevent, address, and manage public health risks associated with the environment. Mobilize community capacity to achieve a safe and healthy environment.

Key Activities:
• Implementation of environmental public health programs and services.
• Conduct routine/demand inspections and provide advice, guidance, review and recommendations for corrective action. May be necessary to recommend closure of facilities.
• Investigate suspected and confirmed communicable and non-communicable diseases; collect and analyze information, provide expert advice, engage in follow-up activities, implement prevention and control measures and prepare reports.
• Use specialized testing equipment to sample and monitor air and drinking water quality and use specialized software to prepare reports, surveillance and demonstrate trends.
• Provide advice and recommendations to management, First Nations leadership and other associated government departments for the protection of First Nation individual and population health. Act as a resource person and provide community based public education training to First Nations community members, Chiefs and Councils, and relevant health professionals.
• Liaise with First Nations, federal, provincial and municipal authorities, and private industries regarding Environmental Public Health issues. Advocate on the behalf of KCA member First Nations communities.

Qualifications:

Education: Successful completion of a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in Public Health Inspection or Environmental Public Health as recognized by the Board of Certification of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors.

• Occupational Certification: Certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada) as granted by the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors.

• Valid Ontario Class "G" Driver’s license.

• Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

• Use and knowledge of electronic information systems for data management, analysis, interpretation and reporting. • Ability to function as a member of an often multi-disciplinary and multi-jurisdictional team

• Able-bodied, must be able to conduct visual inspections, utilize sense of smell to determine presence of contaminants/odours, physical ability to carry equipment, climb ladders, lift objects such as manhole covers, bend and twist when working in cramped confined spaces.

• In addition to CPHI (C) designation, specialized certifications such as, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Onsite Waste Management, CSA Playground, small water systems.

• Knowledge of First Nations leadership, Anishinaabe culture, traditional health and healing practices, politics and protocols, mandates, community infrastructure, jurisdictions, geography, facilities, and surrounding communities.

Salary is competitive and reflects both the responsibilities of the position and the qualifications of the applicant.

TERM: Full Time Position
REPORT TO: Director of Services-Environmental Health
SALARY RANGE: $72,000-$76,000.
LOCATION: Kenora, Ontario
