POSITION:                            LABORATORY ANALYST

DEPARTMENT:                    WATER PRODUCTION

 

Purpose of Classification:

The purpose of this classification is to collect samples from lakes, streams, and the CCWA water distribution system and to conduct microbiological testing and analyses of the same to ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations.

 

Essential Functions:

The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

 

Collects and analyzes water samples: collects data from reservoirs, lakes, and streams; and utilizes advanced field and in-house equipment.

Collects, tests and analyzes water for the presence of total coliforms and E. coli in the existing water distribution system, new water lines added to the system, and finished water produced at three filtration plants: utilizes established industry methods, techniques and standards; performs miscellaneous bacteriological tests; and performs quality control (QC) tests and quality assurance (QA) measures for each testing procedure.

Performs wet chemistry with calibration, standardizations and spikes: conducts enumeration and maintenance of pure cultures for QC/QA, including calibration, standardization, and maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment.

Prepares monthly state reports, daily tests result reports, and keeps records of all tests, calibrations, standardizations, maintenance, and quality control procedures for reservoirs, lakes and streams.

Receives and responds to customer inquiries and complaints regarding water quality: assists with giving tours of the lab to the public.

Conducts special projects such as parallel studies and research for comparative studies in the lab to improve processes.

Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures: receives and reviews various documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate; prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.

Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

Operates or uses various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments: operates and maintains membrane filter apparatus, compound microscopes, microscopes, autoclaves, pH/Cond. meters, DO probe, analytical balances, TOC analyzers, turbidity meters, spectrophotometers, DI units, nano pure system, centrifuges, Microtox, water baths, incubators, refrigerators, GC-MS, Quanti-Tray Sealer, Desiccator, UV lights, Hot Plate Stirrer, Vacuum Pump, Dishwasher, Burets, EXO sonde, and pipettes, and other tools and equipment.

Communicates with supervisor, other CCWA employees, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

 

Additional Functions:

Performs other related duties as required.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate degree in Biology, Chemistry, or a related field required; supplemented by two years of experience in laboratory operations, microbiology, wet chemistry, and sample collection; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. This is considered a Safety Sensitive position.

Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license. Must possess and maintain Georgia Water Laboratory Analyst license.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all CCWA or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.

ADA Compliance:

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (25-50 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, water hazards, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.

PAYGRADE:                         17H (starts at $25.20/hour - $37.80 )
