Position Summary

This position is based out of Muskoka Bay Resort in Gravenhurst

The Financial Controller is responsible for the financial reporting, planning and forecasting at the resort, as well as providing strategic direction and support to the accounting team. Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Financial Controller acts as the property’s strategic financial and business leader while ensuring adherence to established policies and controls. The Financial Controller is a member of the senior leadership team at the resort.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

 

Daily / Weekly

  • Oversee the daily activities of the accounting team, providing direction, coaching and support
  • Authorize resort purchase orders, ensuring responsible spending and correct general ledger coding
  • Authorize capital projects, ensuring they meet capitalization criteria and are within the resort’s capital plan
  • Monitor resort treasury and authorize weekly cheque runs
  • Review and approve payroll submitted by Payroll Coordinator on a bi-weekly basis
  • Provide financial updates at resort leadership meetings
  • Ad hoc financial analysis required by resort leadership and ownership on an as needed basis

 

Monthly

  • Oversee the month end close process, including final review of all working papers prepared by the accounting team and preparation of advanced reconciliations
  • Prepare monthly financial statements (Balance Sheet, Statement of Operations and Statement of Cash Flows) and supporting leadsheet schedules linking working paper documents
  • Prepare and distribute internal division level statements of operations to resort leadership team
  • Analysis of month end results, including detailed payroll and other operating expense review to ensure accurate information, and providing assistance to resort leadership with interpretation of results
  • Prepare and file monthly HST returns
  • Prepare updates to forecasted annual Statement of Operations and Statement of Cash Flows

 

Annually

  • Lead the preparation of operating / capital budgets
  • Coordinate the year-end audit with external auditors
  • Provide business appraisers with information required to complete annual valuation of the resort

 

General Responsibilities

  • Hiring, training and retaining skilled accounting staff
  • Provide financial training and development to resort leadership and operators when necessary
  • Periodic review of financial data systems (Maestro / Opera, Silverware, Lightspeed, ADP) to ensure proper setup of back-office accounting mapping

 

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
  • Charted Professional Accountant (CPA) designation would be considered an asset
  • 5+ years of progressive experience in Finance with at least 2 years of management level experience
  • Advanced level proficiency with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office products; experience with CaseWare Working Papers would be considered an asset
  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly
  • Ability to identify problems and take a solution driven approach to recommending improvements
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
